Product review — policy first, product second
Tide Expense Cards review
The short answer
Tide Expense Cards are debit cards linked to your Tide business account, issued to team members with receipt capture and spending controls. They suit small teams that want employee spending to be visible, evidenced and limited to money the business already holds. They are not a credit facility, and they will not fix an expense process that has no written policy behind it.

Who this is for
Small teams where two to ten people buy things regularly and the founder is currently approving every purchase or reimbursing personal cards.
Before you read on
Write your spending rules first. A card enforces a decision; it does not make one. Build your spending policy.

What the product actually is
An Expense Card is a debit card drawing on the Tide business account balance. Because it is debit, spending cannot exceed available funds — there is no borrowing and no interest.
Cards are issued to named team members, which means transactions are attributable to a person rather than to a shared card.
Receipts can be captured against a transaction in the app, which is the difference between a quiet month end and a chase.
Card availability, limits and any card fees depend on your Tide plan. Confirm current details on Tide's site.
Capabilities
Features that matter for a small team
Named cards
Each cardholder's spending is separately visible.
Spending limits
Set limits appropriate to the role rather than to the account balance.
Receipt capture at purchase
Evidence collected when it exists, not three weeks later.
No borrowing
Spending is capped by the account balance, which caps the worst case.
Reconciliation
Categorised transactions feed accounting software.
Costs, risks and limitations
- • Card and plan fees vary; check current pricing before assuming cards are free on your plan.
- • Debit means no float: a large supplier payment must be funded on the day.
- • Cards do not create policy. Without written rules, evidence requirements and a monthly review, you will still have disputes.
- • Losing a card or a phone is an access risk; agree how cards are frozen and who does it.
- • Tide is a business financial platform rather than a bank itself. Protection arrangements depend on the specific account — check the current Tide account terms for the applicable safeguarding or FSCS position.
Who benefits
- • Teams currently reimbursing staff who cannot comfortably fund purchases themselves.
- • Founders who want spending visible without taking on debt.
- • Businesses of any structure, including sole traders, since no credit application is involved.
Who should look elsewhere
- • Businesses that need a genuine credit facility or a payment float.
- • Teams making one or two small purchases a year, where reimbursement is simpler.
- • Businesses whose existing bank already issues controlled employee debit cards.
Alternatives
How this compares
| Option | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Tide Expense Cards (debit) | No debt, named cards, receipt capture. | No credit, no float, plan-dependent fees. |
| Reimbursement | No product to set up. | Staff fund the business; slow, unfair and hard to control. |
| Prepaid cards | Hard spending cap per card. | Top-up admin; often weaker integration. |
| Business credit card | Credit and rewards. | Debt, personal guarantee, interest, companies only. |
How to apply, in order
- Write the expense policy first, including what may be bought and what evidence is required.
- Open or use an existing Tide account and confirm your plan includes the cards you need.
- Issue named cards with individual limits.
- Brief each cardholder on the policy and get an acknowledgement in writing.
- Review every transaction monthly for the first quarter.

Read the current offer record and disclosureFrequently asked questions
Can a contractor have a Tide Expense Card?
Technically you can issue a card to anyone you authorise, but you should first decide whether giving a contractor company spending authority is appropriate, and record it in your policy and their agreement.
Do Expense Cards stop overspending?
They limit it to the balance and the card limit. They do not stop inappropriate spending, which is what your policy and monthly review are for.
Are Tide Expense Cards free?
That depends on your plan and the number of cards. Check the current Tide pricing page — we do not restate prices that change.
