Set the authority level for each task

Authority is what someone may decide without asking you. Set it deliberately, not by habit.

How much authority have I actually given?

2 tasks mapped to authority levels

Responding to routine customer enquiries

Level 4 — Act, then tell me

Review: Monthly review of outcomes.

Approving supplier invoices under £250

Level 3 — Decide, tell me before acting

Assumptions and limitations
  • Five authority levels, each with a default review cadence. You can change the cadence to suit the risk.
  • Authority levels are a management model, not a legal delegation of directors' duties.
  • Record roles rather than personal details. Notes about individuals belong in your own HR records.

Methodology and calculation

This tool is designed with transparency in mind. The results are calculated based on the following logic:

  • Maps each task to one of five authority levels with a review cadence.

Limitations and scope

  • Authority levels are a management model, not a legal delegation of directors' duties.
